ATTICA — The village will host an Arbor Day celebration on May 1.

The celebration will take place 9 a.m. at Attica Memorial Park.

Village arborist Nancy Haas of Larkin Tree Care will have an interactive learning booth. Mayor Nathan Montford will also read a proclamation and people can learn more about the village tree board.

Four new trees will also be planted, while artwork from the elementary school will be on display. Interested residents can also watch “Take Down Trees” remove some limbs from damaged trees.

The first American Arbor Day was conducted in Nebraska City, Neb. in 1872. President Theodore Roosevelt later issued an “Arbor Day Proclamation to the School Children of the United States” about the importance of trees and forestry education in 1907.
