BATAVIA — With December here and snow flying, get ready to rock around the Christmas tree.
After a sold-out show in October, Marsha McWilson will be coming back to Batavia Downs, 8315 Park Rd., Batavia, to perform two more shows. The first is in December to spread some holiday cheer.
In a holiday show, McWilson will be doing a full Vegas-style show, this time singing songs by Michael Jackson, the Temptations, and performing old-time Christmas favorites.
“I’m going to be doing different Motown favorites; like ‘A Motown Christmas’,” McWilson said. “I’m going to be doing costume changes. I’m going to be bringing a choir to come perform with me.”
The New Beginnings Choral Ensemble founded by Ella Robinson is based in Buffalo and has been active for more than 40 years. Members will perform “Joy to the World” and “Emmanuel.”
Some staff from Batavia Downs will also join on the stage to perform some of the songs. McWilson said she’ll be calling people from the audience to help them.
When McWilson learned not only her first show sold out but the hotel sold out, she was elated.
“I actually came early that day and I actually said a prayer. I said, ‘Lord let the spirit of joy and rejuvenation come through the building because there is so much with COVID,’” she said. “A lot of people kept saying they came and were really tired and drained. Then they said when they left, they never sat down through the whole time. They danced through the whole time. They were rejuvenated.”
The best part, McWilson said, she had an intimate fellowship with the fans. She had stayed the night at the hotel and got up the next morning to eat breakfast with people who had been at her concert. She was able to take photographs and sign autographs with them. “I thought that was really nice,” McWilson said. “We’ll be doing that again.”
The show will be Dec. 9 with doors opening at 6 p.m and the music starting at 7 p.m. Tickets, which cost $10 ($15 for VIP), are available at Batavia Downs and online at BataviaConcerts.com.
