BATAVIA — One doesn’t need to leave their home to enjoy the finery of the arts.

Normally every December and May the Batavia Society of Artists holds an art show in the Richmond Memorial Library Gallery Room and one at GO! Art in August. But with the library closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic the Society of Artists spring show was in jeopary. But instead of having no show, the 70-year-old organization created a virtual one, which may be viewed on YouTube at , and instead of having no show at all, the society decided to hold a virtual one, which can be watched online at or

Out of the 30 artists which make up the society membership, 12 sent in artwork.

“I think more people would have participated if we had more time. It’s just something we threw together and came up with 10 days before,” said Teresa Tamfer, treasurer for the Batavia Society of Artists. “With COVID they might not have had anything new to put in.”

She said trying to make time for painting was hard for her, not getting any new art done in the last couple months as other priorities took her attention. She said other artists might have turned to art as a means to give them something good.

“I think everybody is different,” Teresa Tamfer said.

Nikki Tamfer put the art together for the video. She said it took a couple of days to do with most of the work going into cropping the photos to make sure it was just the artwork being shown.

In the past, the society has done themed shows, but this year there wasn’t going to be a theme anyway as they experimented with the virtual format, Nikki Tamfer said.

Teresa Tamfer said if the situation is restrictions remain come summer, the society will do another virtual show for the GO! Art exhibit.

The Batavia Art Society has been around since 1950 and accepts artists of all mediums and skill levels. There are monthly demonstrations to help promote the arts. Members are always welcome, and the public is welcome to come to the demonstrations for a $5 fee. Membership costs $30 for a year and for students and veterans, it costs $10. For couples looking to join, membership is $50.

For information on purchasing artwork in the virtual show, or more information about the artists, email or on Facebook at Batavia Society of Artists.
