Are you planning on using firewood to heat your home this winter?
Do you have a lot of dead Ash trees on your property?
How about doing the work yourself, this year, with the use of a wood processor right in your own driveway?
Knowing for quite some time they wanted to become business owners, Jim and Terri Lawson of Batavia recently embarked on a new business venture – Lawson Woodworks, LLC – a wood processing business that allows customers to rent a wood processing machine and process an abundance of wood on their own at one time, more conveniently.
Jim, who works full-time for the City of Batavia Department of Public Works, and his wife, Terri, who works full-time at Pulsafeeder, in Henrietta, decided to launch Lawson Woodworks, LLC, 2886 West Main Street Rd., Batavia, after their own successful experience processing wood for their home.
The pair purchased a DYNA Wood Processor SC14, which they intend to rent by the day, weekend, or week. The DYNA, known as the most economical and reliable machine due to its high-output performance, processes full logs with a maximum dimension of 18” diameter and 12’ maximum length. The machine processes four to five face cord per hour. Larger logs could require the use of a forklift to lift logs onto the machine, but the use of the machine is considerably easy once provided with a tutorial.
“We have been heating with wood for decades. Chunking it in the woods, then hauling it home only to handle it again getting it split. Using this machine is a huge time saver, going from full log to split wood in a matter of minutes,” said Jim.
From start to finish, the Lawson’s will walk patrons through the process prior to rental.
“When they (customers) arrive after arranging for the rental they will fill out a rental contract and pay for the rental with cash or check. Jimmy will go over the machine with them and answer any questions they have. The machine tows using a trailer hitch, so the customer will hook up and take it to wherever they will be using it,” said Terri.
“People can rent from anywhere, they don’t have to live in Batavia. Delivery is available with additional fees,” said Terri.
She continued, “We have always wanted to have a business, just never found anything that fit us until now. We saw a need for this in our area and we hope to gradually grow to have more than one machine available.”
