Pickup hits Amish buggy

SHELDON — Eight members of two families on their way home from vacations were injured in a head-on crash on Route 20A Monday, Wyoming County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deputy William Asquith said a Pennsylvania family was traveling home when the driver crossed into the oncoming lane about 6 p.m.

Their car crashed into a car carrying a family from Orchard Park. Asquith said they were traveling home from Maryland.

Eight people in both vehicles were taken to local hospitals for treatment, including one by Mercy Flight.

One person was critically injured and the other injuries were minor, Asquith said.

The crash drew a large response, with first responders from Varysburg, Bennington, Strykersville, North Java and Warsaw fire departments, along with Mercy Flight.

Wyoming County Accident Reconstruction Team was called to assist.

The crash closed Route 20A for nearly four hours.
