BROCKPORT - Fire departments from Genesee and Orleans counties were called to help battle a massive fire at an apartment complex early this morning.
The fire at Viking Apartments and Townhouses was reported about 5:30 a.m.
According to Monroe County Incident Page on Facebook, the first crews responding found heavy smoke and flames shooting from the building.
That prompted calls for more departments, with crews from throughout Monroe, Orleans and Genesee called to the scene.
Volunteers from Bergen, Holley, Clarendon and Kendall helped battle the fire, which caused multiple tenants to flee the buildings.
Spectrum News reported Holley firefighters helped rescue one woman from a balcony.
There were reports that two people were injured.
The fire quickly spread, with a roof collapsing at one point.
Fire officials said animal control officers also were called to the scene for “multiple animals rescued.”
The fire was deemed under control at 7:46 a.m.
The apartment complex is off Route 31 near Wegman’s and close to Brockport schools.
Buses from the school also were called to the scene so tenants could take shelter and keep warm.
