BATAVIA — The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an inmate died following a suicide attempt at the County Jail, Sheriff William Sheron Jr. reported today.
Sheron said the 28-year-old inmate, Kyle Adam Scheuerlein, died 10 days after attempting suicide.
While making routine rounds, a Genesee County correction officer found Scheuerlein, of Batavia, hanging from a shower curtain rod at approximately 12:27 p.m. Jan. 4. The officer immediately summoned assistance and began performing life-saving measures. The inmate was taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, where he died Jan. 14.
Scheuerlein had been incarcerated on bail in the Genesee County Jail since Jan. 1 following his arrest by the City of Batavia Police Department on charges of second-degree burglary and second-degree criminal contempt — disobey a court order.
The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident in conjunction with the state Commission of Corrections.
