Welfare check yields DWI charge

GAINESVILLE — A Castile man was charged Thursday after a report of people shooting fireworks out of a vehicle.

Deputies received the report at 9:53 p.m. They responded to the area near Main Street and Shearing Road.

Upon arrival, they saw a black pickup truck driving down Main Street without headlights. Fireworks were allegedly being shot out the passenger side at a male running across the street.

The pickup continued down the street before turning onto Shearing Road without signaling.

Deputies pulled the vehicle over. They said they detected a strong alcohol odor while the driver, Charles R. Wells, 49, showed signs of impairment.

Field sobriety tests were then conducted.

Wells was charged with DWI, driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or more, failure to keep right, failure to signal a turn, and driving without headlights. He was issued an appearance ticket and is to appear in Village Court at a later date.
