Charges filed in Orangeville standoff

ARCADE — It’s like something out of a 1960s biker gang movie.

Except the alleged brute was not on a motorcycle, but a snowmobile, Wyoming County sheriff’s investigators said.

An “older” member of the Tri-County Drift Hoppers Snowmobile Club was working on a trail in a flooded area between Hiram and Cadwell Roads Sunday when a group of four or five snowmobilers approached from the Bliss area.

The member noticed that the snowmobiles had modified exhaust systems, which are illegal and upsetting to landowners because of the overly loud exhausts.

The club member “advised the leader of this group with this information,” Investigator Aaron Anderson said.

The man became upset and began to assault the club member, causing injuries. A farmer on a tractor in a field near the trail saw the assault, Anderson said.

The farmer ran to help but the snowmobilers took off, heading toward Arcade. The assailant is described as “a larger white male wearing a black, full-faced helmet and operating a mid 2000s yellow and black Ski-Doo with a “can” exhaust.
