James W. Hill

OTTO — James W. Hill, 79, of Otto, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk. He was born on June 20, 1942, in Gowanda, son of the late Theophilus and Margaret (Wehurst) Hill. At St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus, he married the former Phyllis Goodemote, who survives.

For over 45 years, Jim owned and operated his dairy farm, Star Hill Farm, in Otto and was very active in the local farming community. He was past President of the Steamburg Co-Op for 15 years, past Director of the Dairy Lee Cooperative, past Director of the ADA for over 12 years, past Director of the Dairy Princess Program, and would overhaul tractors and help many local farmers with equipment. Jim was also a member of St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus and was also their treasurer. He enjoyed helping the Amish and taking care of his horses, as well as tinkering on whatever he could find to fix. He also loved his family and will be missed by many.

Besides his loving wife of 60 years, Jim is survived by two sons, Todd (Linda) Hill of Randolph, and Rodney (Cindy) Hill of Cattaraugus; and two daughters, Debbie (Tom) Douglas of Bethany, and Kathy (Russ) Capron of Otto. Also surviving are two brothers, John (Marie) Hill of Florida, and Doug (Shelly) Hill of Missouri; and eleven grandchildren, Eric (Jess), Matt, Jim, Jennifer (Chris), Christi (Nate), Zachary (Lizzy) Derek (Melissa), Kelly (Justin), Ryan, Rebecca (Ronnie), and Randy. Jim is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Donald Hill.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021, from 4-8 p.m. at Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St. in Little Valley. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 4, 2021, at 11 a.m. from St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus.

Burial will be in North Otto Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or St. John’s Church in Cattaraugus.
