Shirley D. Brown

Brown

Shirley D. Brown of Venice, Florida, formerly of Batavia, New York, passed away on Nov. 12, 2020 ,in Venice, at her home.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1925, in Oakfield, N.Y., to Margaret and Ernest Mullaney. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister, Dorothy Mullaney McNellen and her beloved and devoted husband, Marlow Forrest Brown, and her beloved son-in-law, Ronald E. Hermance Jr., formerly of Batavia.

Shirley married Marlow F. Brown on June 14, 1947. They raised their children in Batavia.

She loved being a mom and a wife and truly excelled at both. She was a “nester,” and always took great pride in her homes, from wallpapering to painting rooms, to washing windows, mowing the lawn, cooking, baking, sewing curtains, and redecorating a room were her passions. She also raised two children with unconditional love and support.

She was also involved in volunteer work for many years, PTAs, the First United Methodist Church and hospital guilds. Later in life, she worked as a part-time aid at a nursery school in Batavia for several years.

In the early 1960s, she worked as a model at Sibley’s department store in Rochester. She was stunningly beautiful, not only physically, but inwardly as well. She was very giving and generous on every level and maintained these characteristics throughout her life. The contentment and her gratefulness for the life that she led, has given her family so much joy and happiness and gratitude. She set a wonderful standard for all to aspire to and to follow. She will be deeply missed by so many.

Marlow and Shirley retired to Florida in 1985. They spent the last 25 years at Venice Golf and Country Club.

She leaves behind many dear and special neighbors, friends and caregivers. She is deeply missed by her daughter, Kris Brown Hermance, of North Palm Beach, Florida, (R. E. Hermance Jr. deceased); and her son, Gary M. Brown and his wife, Heidi, of Ithaca, New York. She is also survived by five adoring and grateful grandchildren. Emily Hermance Spahr, (Nick) of Atlanta, Georgia, R. Christopher Hermance (Connie) of Devon, Pa., Alexander Brown Hermance, (Erin) of Washington, D.C., Haley A. Brown, (Drew Dresser fiancé), and Madeline A. Brown, all of New York City. They all loved her and have so many happy and fun memories of their nanny. She loved them – “a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.” Her six great-grandchildren also survive, and they were so blessed to have her as their “Gigi.” They are Charlotte Hermance Spahr, Ronald Edmund Spahr, (Teddy), of Atlanta, Ga., Hayes Rivington Hermance, Lillian True Hermance of Devon, Pa., Margaux Rose Hermance and Patrick Ronald Hermance of Washington, D.C. Cheers to you Mom, Nanny, Gigi! We love you more….you did good!
