Making history: Me on the cover of SI Swimsuit!

Scott DeSmit

All I can hear is Steely Dan playing over and over in my head.

On Thanksgiving, and this may have been an omen, it was “Peg.”

“Hmmm? I haven’t heard that song in years,” I said to myself. “I have no idea why I can’t stop humming that tune.”

On Friday morning it became apparent.

Black Friday. Not the shopping Black Friday, which actually began on some Friday in June, but the stock market Black Friday.

That’s when “Black Friday” took over “Peg” in my brain.

Yes, the stock market took a bleak dive. That was expected.

The reason?

COVID, of course.

A new, even deadlier, wiser variant, of course.

I am the first to admit: I am COVID-ed out. Done. Had it with all things COVID.

Yet, in the vast recesses of my brain, I worry.

Something is not right here.

We, as in Genesee, Orleans and less so Wyoming counties, are seeing unprecedented numbers of COVID cases.

Yet on Wednesday vast numbers of people filled groceries stores and later that night bars and restaurants.

Wall-to-wall people. No masks. Vaccinated and unvaccinated, all slobbering over each other and sharing drinks and kisses and putting their slimy paws over everything and people coughing and grocery carts all sticky with whatever.

In the past two months I have known more people who have contracted COVID then I have in all the months since this first struck in early 2020.

Some are very sick. Some have died. A few, very few, exhibited no symptoms.

And last week, our Health Department announced that we would have no mask mandates.

No reasoning for it, really, other than politics.

Mandates result in angry people.

Don’t you dare tell us what to do or put in our bodies!

The main thrust is this: The vaccine is part of a conspiracy by our goverment to control us.

Oh. And hundreds of thousands of people have died after taking the vaccine and many others have gotten sick, lost limbs, grew extra heads and are having babies with tails and horns.

Odd that EVERY country in the world is pushing vaccines.

THAT is some conspiring going on.

Me? I do not trust our goverment at all. Our leaders are corrupt and always have been. Both sides.

Yet, I find it hard, if not impossible, to believe that the former president, He Who Shall Not Be Named, conspired with every leader on the planet to create a vaccine that will control us and/or harm us.

(For those who are screaming “Liberal Socialist Pig!” at me, perhaps you forgot who initiated all this. Remember “Operation Warp Speed?” Or who declared a national emergency that shut down our economy and resulted in mandates and stay-at-home orders. Funny that Biden has done none of those things, yet gets blamed for all that. I think Biden has done enough harm to pile more things upon him that aren’t his fault.)

Where was I?

Oh, right. COVID.

Once again, a new variant is spreading throughout the world. COVID is shutting down countries, again. It’s only a matter of time before it gets worse here, too.

And we do nothing.

The simplest, least harmful thing we can do to protect ourselves and others is to wear a mask and wash our hands every once in a while.

And get vaccinated.

Before you send nasty emails and leave nasty, insipid Facebook comments: SHUT THE *@-* UP!

I am tired of all of you. You pull stats from your rears that are nothing but lies and BS from social media and “My friend’s second cousin is a nurse and she said that everyone in the hospital or who died were all vaccinated!”

No. They weren’t. Complete, utter BS.

Shut up and help stop this before it’s too late. You think it’s bad now? Wait a few years.

I, for one, don’t want to keep going through this for the next 10 years.

Yeah, my mood is black on this Friday.
