Blind-sided: in which a person has a poor view, typically of approaching danger.
The Villages of Orleans Health and Rehabilitation Center was not blind-sided as previously stated in an article from May 5, 2020, under the headline “I don’t want to die.”
On Feb. 25, 2020, all facilities in this state were given directives to start preparing for the COVID-19 by gathering needed PPE and updating facility protocols almost one month before facilities went on lockdown.
On March 6, 2020, all nursing homes in New York State received a “Dear Owner/Operator and Nursing Home Administrator letter with the opening paragraph, “The New York State Department of Health is providing this guidance regarding precautions and procedures nursing homes must take to protect and maintain the health and safety of their residents and staff during the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak”.
Again I say, “Blind-sided”... NOT.
This facility was not blind-sided. This facility failed the duty of protecting its residents and staff. The residents and hard working staff were blind-sided by the lack of proper equipment that was required that the owners, administration and management had been well aware of.
The Family Council of this facility has spent the past two years trying to improve the conditions at this nursing home.
It is a shame it took a pandemic and too many lost lives to finally get responses from the politicians.
No politician would allow their family to be subjected to these conditions and neither should anyone else’s. Stop passing the buck.
