We’ve been losing out on the benefits of large-scale solar plants because of a sticky and arcane approval process. Now, under the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Law, signed by Governor Cuomo last year, a new process is to be put in place.
Solar plants bring in millions of dollars in taxes, investment and land payments, plus supply local jobs, both in initial construction and ongoing, that pay a family wage. They also wean us from climate-destroying fossil fuels. The Morris Ridge project alone can power 38,000 homes.
It’s pretty amazing that fighting climate change can be so good for our community. Our local leaders should be encouraging the new Office of Renewable Energy Siting to ramp up solar projects as quickly as possible.
