Editor:

Today is Flag Day and we just got back from traveling to the Village of Akron to see the “Avenue of Flags” placed in front of homes. It was a spur of the moment tour of Akron, and seeing hundreds of flags along our route was such a thrill.

In order to have a flag placed in front of your home, you give the Akron Lions Club $40 and they put a flag up five times during the year; on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day. They take care of the flags keeping them clean, putting them up at day break and taking them down at sundown, on each of the five days. That’s a pretty good deal, I think, and shows how much people honor and love the flag of our country.

This month we also celebrate our fathers and that will be this coming Sunday. Ads in the paper are showing great deals they have on sale to honor Dads but so little time left to get those deals. I’m a little sad to think that I won’t be buying Father’s day gifts since my father is no longer alive physically, but very much alive in my memories.

My father loved all his children and provided for us not only materially with food and clothing but also spiritually by teaching us about God, our Heavenly Father, and that was one of the best memories I have of my Dad. I was truly blessed to have such a special father.

Perhaps you didn’t have a father like mine but each one of you has a Heavenly Father who created you and loves you unconditionally. He sent his son, Jesus into the world so that we could know the love he has for us.

John 3: 16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (NIV) Jesus died and rose again, so that we could have eternal life, and if we accept him into our heart, we will have a home in heaven with Jesus and our Heavenly Father. And that is a Father to love and serve no matter what kind of earthly father you may have had.

God gave us fathers to love and care for us and in return we are to love and honor them. Won’t you join me in praising God for fathers who are special, and be grateful that we also have a Heavenly Father who loves us unconditionally! You can do that where ever you are and I can do that right here at my kitchen table.
