ORCHARD PARK — The Bills learned on Sunday that a second player of theirs will be opting-out of the upcoming season. About a week after Buffalo lost defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, defensive back EJ Gaines announced he will also forgo the ‘20 campaign.
Gaines will receive a $150,000 salary advance as a result of his voluntary opt-out, while the one-year contract he signed this offseason will carry over to the ‘21 season.
“He has some family things, which, you know, we totally respect and understand.,” said Bills’ general manager Brandon Beane.
Gaines was out with a core muscle injury for the entirety of last season but was expected to compete for playing time this season.
Following a previous stint with the Bills in ‘17, Gaines spent the ‘18 season in Cleveland with the Browns. With the Bills in ‘17, Gaines started 11 games, recording an interception and 59 tackles. Gaines has never played a full season since being drafted by the Rams in ‘14.
