MEDINA — Sweets are delicious, but books are candy for the mind.
Author’s Note is joining nearly 900 independent bookstores around the country in celebrating Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday with a roster of visiting authors and other celebratory activities.
This is the first time Author’s Note has joined it.
“I’ve actually been a visiting author for Independent Bookstore Day celebrations for several bookstores in the past,” said owner Julie Berry. “So I’m kind of accustomed to this rhythm from the other side of the table. You know, coming in as a visiting author and talking up customers.”
The nationwide event, first conceived in 2013 by the American Booksellers Association, promotes, celebrates, and highlights the value of independent bookstores and their impacts on local communities.
Author’s Note’s self-chosen theme for its first Independent Bookstore Day is “A Bookstore is a Candy Store for the Mind.”
The theme is unique to Author’s Note, and Berry said she felt it was important to do something more than simply say it was Independent Bookstore Day.
Bree Barton will be the first featured author at Saturday’s celebration, signing books and greeting fans from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by Buffalo-based authors Dee Romito and Kate Karyus Quinn from noon to 1:30 p.m., then Rochester-area author Keely Hutton and Boston-area author and literary agent Ammi-Joan Paquette from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Author Julie Berry, the owner of Author’s Note, will be available throughout the day to sign books and greet guests. All the visiting authors will serve as “guest booksellers,” recommending favorite titles from the store.
“In this instance I wanted to draw from others who are able to get to the area,” Berry said. “But because I’m an author, I know so many authors. I’ve lived in New England and I’ve lived in Los Angeles. One of my friends from LA — Bree Barton — recently relocated to Ithaca. I knew she had a new book coming out, so I reached out to her. She was more than willing to come.”
Ammi-Joan Paquette is also a friend of Berry’s from the Boston area who is coming in as well.
Throughout the day, games, drawings and giveaways will be available for customers of all ages, with several IBD-exclusive items supplied by the ABA for sale or giveaway that day only.
“I think the real appeal will be the visiting authors,” Berry said. “I grew up in Medina and I never met an author until I went to college. So one of the things important to me starting Author’s Note was to bring more authors here and connect them to the community.”
Author’s Note is located at 519 Main St. in Medina. For more information about Independent Bookstore Day festivities at Author’s Note, visit AuthorsNote.com, or call (585) 798-3642.
