BATAVIA — Demolition of Cary Hall on East Main Street got a late start, but should be done in the next few weeks, a Healthy Living Campus project manager says.
“I got some word that they started taking the building down yesterday (Monday). The north side of the building was where they started,” said David Ciurzynski of Ciurzynski Consulting, LLC. “That should be done and cleaned up in four or five weeks.”
The demolition and asbestos abatement cost of about $400,000 is part of the $35.3 million budget for the Healthy Living Campus, a partnership of Rochester Regional Health-United Memorial Medical Center and GLOW YMCA.
“It took a little longer than expected to get the building cleaned out and the asbestos removed,” Ciurzynski said. “We had hoped to be closer to the beginning of July. Just last week on Friday, we got everything finalized.”
Completion of the Healthy Living Campus is expected in late 2023. The delay in demolition is not expected to have a huge impact on the project timeline.
“It will have very little effect on it. We always build a little leeway into our schedule to make sure we get things done on time,” Ciurzynski said.
The project manager said the next step, after demolition is done, is starting on the foundations for the building.
“Just looking forward to getting the building down and getting the foundation project started,” he said, adding that once that happens, building seems to go pretty quick.
The campus will feature 22 exam rooms and two medical procedure rooms. Rochester Regional Health-United Memorial Medical Center providers will use that space to offer primary care and telemedicine appointments, behavioral health and crisis intervention support, cancer prevention outreach, chronic illness and community education services. There will also be a drop-in child care center where families can safely leave their children while at those appointments.
The new campus, which will replace the current GLOW YMCA, will also have a new indoor pool, group exercise studios, wellness center with the latest exercise equipment and indoor walking/running track, teaching kitchen and adventure room play area for children
The campus will also feature an innovative intergenerational room, where seniors, teens and families can use the space for different activities every day. And it will have classrooms that during the school year will run pre-k and before- and after-school care programs, along with camps in the summer.
