MUMFORD – Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies have charged a Caledonia man in connection with a robbery at Free Style Mercantile in Mumford Monday afternoon.

Deputies said Nicholas Donoghue, 31, robbed the store at 2659 Scottsville Mumford Rd. shortly after 1 p.m. Monday and then fled in a red, four-door sedan. Shortly after the robbery, a civilian submitted a tip that they’d spotted the vehicle Donoghue was seen fleeing in in Livingston County.

According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the civilian submitted the tip around 4 p.m. As law enforcement was responding to the area where the vehicle had been spotted, Donoghue bailed out of the vehicle and ran into nearby fields off Cider Road in the town of Caledonia.

Deputies and a K9 unit tracked Donoghue through a wooded area in the vicinity and eventually took him into custody. Donoghue was bitten during the pursuit. After his arrest, he was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.

A clerk at Free Style Mercantile told the County News Donoghue claimed to have a gun when he entered the store and demanded she hand over all the cash in the register, but the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said no weapon was recovered when Donoghue was taken into custody.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said late Monday that they’d detained two suspects in connection with the robbery. Deputies ultimately determined the second person was not involved in the robbery and they were released without charges.

Donoghue was charged with robbery in the first degree, a class B felony, and grand larceny in the fourth degree, an E felony. After his arrest, he was arraigned in Riga Town Court and remanded to the Monroe County Jail on $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond.

Additional charges in Livingston County related to Donoghue’s apprehension are expected, according to Livingston County Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty.

Donoghue is a level two sex offender. According to the state’s Division of Criminal Justice Services, he was convicted of third degree rape in 2011 for having sex with a 14-year-old girl. According to the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Donoghue was on parole for the rape conviction at the time of the robbery.
