ALBION — The number of COVID-19 cases and deaths took a significant jump Friday in Orleans County, as it saw the area’s single biggest increase since April 19.
A total of 23 new positive cases were reported in the county, with 22 at Orchard Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Medina, and another in Ridgeway. That brings the county’s total to 194, exceeding Genesee County.
Five new deaths were also reported.
Four were at Orchard Rehabilitation and Nursing. The other one was at The Villages of Orleans Health and Rehabilitation.
Out of the new cases, one is in their 20s; three are in their 50s; three are in their 60s; six are in their 70s, seven are in their 8’s, and three are in their 90s.
Of the total positive cases, 15 are in the hospital.
The jump in Orleans County is in stark juxtaposition to Genesee and Wyoming counties, which reported no new positive cases.

Paul Pettit, director for Genesee and Orleans Health Departments, said the counties have been participating in swabbing all residents and staff, even before the governor’s executive order. However, with more testing becoming available, the numbers are increasing as a result of that testing.
“It’s a good thing we’re finding these cases,” he said. “Prior we didn’t catch all these things.”
With the region heading into Memorial Day weekend, Genesee County Chairwoman Shelly Stein reminded residents that while Phase 1 businesses have re-opened, Phase 2 is in their hands and depends on their actions.
“Take time to protect yourself and family,” she said. “Planned family gatherings are subject to NY PAUSE restrictions, which is no more than 10 people. Do this for others who are more vulnerable, if not for yourself and other family members.”
Pettit said businesses in the other phases are required to have an opening plan, and should start having those conversations. With the opening of phases driven by data, the difference between phases now may be a minimum of two weeks.
He said plans should focus on social distancing, washing and reducing capacity.
