MACHIAS — A Warsaw man died, despite attempts by state troopers to help him using an automated external defibrilator, after a motorcycle accident Saturday.
New York State Police in Machias reported today that at about 2:16 p.m., troopers responded to an accident on State Route 242. Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle was traveling east on Route 242 with a group of three other motorcycles. The motorcycle veered across the westbound lane for no apparent reason, striking the guide rail which ejected the operator, William H. Shumaker, 72, and the passenger, Judith Shumaker, 77 of Warsaw. William Shumaker suffered fatal injuries and Judith Shumaker suffered severe head trauma. She was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center for her injuries.
The New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Cattaraugus County coroner assisted with this investigation, which is ongoing.
